The Playroom Tiny Sofa

The 8-year old young man of the house saved up and bought this little sofa himself. It's a few years old now and needed a new slipcover -- he picked out the fabric (Fabricland) and he and his mom were off to find an area rug in charcoal and lime green.

One Way Draw Patio Drapes

What to do if the drapes must pull to one side. This hardware has brackets that fasten to the top of the rod. The curtains move via ball-bearing runners -smoothly, no bunching or grabbing. If a center join in the rod is necessary, the runners still move freely.

Drywall picture hanger

I mentioned these things in a column a few weeks ago, this is what they look like. They really work. I use the 25 pound ones mostly, for a big picture, use two hooks side by side.They are also called Monkey hooks.

Black and Peach Wing chair

I love wing chairs. They are classics but they can fit any decor. Here it is in a dining room and while the peach-colored piping may seem a bit unusual, it matches the peach in the pattern of the fabric and ties to the peach tiles in the kitchen -- visible just to the right of the chair. So it works quite well and the home-owner loves it.

We had 6 or 7 meters, just barely enough. Thankfully, the pattern didn't need to be matched everywhere, but I did have enough to match on the cushion seat and front and chair.

This home has a soft, gentle ambience that is very comforting and inviting. It's right on the water, and the flower gardens are a true testament to the owners love of green things. You'd never guess this little gem was here - can't be seen from the road at all. We did soft green slipcovers and new drapes. Quite a transformation.

Deck furniture

Three cushion sets - all using Sunbrella fabric and the new outdoor cushion 'foam' I found. This foam won't mildew or mold, or collect water. The Sunbrella fabric won't fade or disintegrate. These cushions should last as long as the homeowners want them to. They can put the cushions out in the spring and take them in at the end of summer. An upside/downside to the new foam is that it is heavy. These cushions will not blow off.

Mount Ida Hall

Clare and Rob Fensom are doing an amazing thing at Harmonius Homestead and ewe including moving and refurbishing Mount Ida Hall. The windows had been boarded over - for years. Clare and Rob chose this plaid fabric for the blackout drapes - very much in keeping with the feel and style of the hall. It's a really warm room. ( And available to rent...)

Just a bit of a change

The fabric is a real find - unbleached cotton with tons of texture. I've never done a loose fit cover before - what a change. We replaced the back cushions with down and added down toppers to the seat cushions. That made a HUGE difference to the look and it is a sink-into sofa now.

Jackie Von Tobel Display

First it was old and sort of green, then it was raspberry - which co-ordinated with the floral slipcover on the sofa. Then the kitty destroyed the slipcovered sofa and the chair didn't work with the new sofa. So now the chair is floral and the whole room looks like spring.

What a difference a wall makes

The client loved the fabric but also loved the green wall color and wanted to try the two together. Sometimes it's best to let clients just do their own thing.

A few phone calls and a few renderings later we painted the walls the same aubergene as the stripe in the fabric. Yes it's darker but it is a fabulous color and the blinds don't yell anymore. And just for the heck of it the opposite wall is the same cranberry as in the stripe. The radiator cover is a really acid lime green. The client loves the new colors.

Re-purposing a dated valance

I wish there were before pictures of the original valance..

The original was a very large balloon valance and stationery panels in the living room only. We left the panels, found a peach co-ordinate for the dining room panels and re-made the one valance into a soft curve bottom gathered valance for all 4 windows. Much more cohesive and the lady of the house likes it. Which is really the only important part.

Little purple chair

I found this little chair, it's only 26" high, at the second hand store for $40.00. I thought I'd use it as a sample chair but it fits a corner of the spare bedroom perfectly - so there it sat all purple in the gold and red bedroom until I had a bit of time to make a cover for it. The cover is linen, once again from Fabricland at $8.00 per meter it was a great deal even though it shrunk a bit in the pre-wash; from 54" wide to 48" and I may have just enough left to do a tiny pillow. Maybe.

The banquette

The seats hide storage. Wonderful design.
The homeowner is going to replace the small glass table top with a larger elliptical shape. That will give her seating for all the grandchildren at once.

Taffeta chair

Before and after of another second hand store find. The fabric is bronze taffeta, the design is a sage green. I found the brush fringe on a 70% off sale and used it double. It is exactly the same colors as the chair.

This is a rendering, a design scheme for a bedroom. The 3 part plan includes a mood board - showing various room elements, rugs, trims and fabrics. It also includes a floor plan, to scale, using the furniture and materials from the mood board. The elevation rendering shows how all the elements together would look as as completed bedroom. Also available are actual fabric swatches, a 'shopping list' of the furniture used and a detailed budget.

Design on a Photograph

This is a really simple example of designing on a photograph. The first photo is the undressed window, the middle is a rendering done on the actual photograph (with some plants outside the window added) and the third is the finished drapes. If we have fabric chosen, I can take a picture of the fabric and apply it directly to the rendering as well. No more 'trying to visualize'.

I include this service as part of any window treatment contract.

From formal to fun

Even though this chair was sitting off to the right of the window there was a lot of sun damage along the left side. The room is quite formal but the burgundy stripe was just too much. The homeowner has a great sense of color and style and picked this outdoor fabric for the slipcover that actually looks really good in the slightly Victorian space. It needs a cushion in solid brown with some fantastic trim and I'll find something, I'm sure, in Vancouver next week.

Another ottoman saved!!

Another false cushion ottoman that was destined for the big bin. --Tufted top, worn olive green velvet, all lopsided and wonky. The slipcover makes it look like it belongs in the room. The club chair in the client's loving room is upholstered in this fabric too.

Ladybugs

This is a really nice 1970's home, lots of cedar walls. LOTS of cedar walls but the homeowner is transforming it into a seaside cottage starting with new soft beige slipcovers for the chenille chairs in the living room.

New old rocker

The local heritage museum (Haney House) is mounting some 'vignettes'. One is centered around a painting done by a local artist at the turn of the century of a nursery with admiring uncles looking down at the new baby in the crib. The chair in the painting is a rocker wingback, slipcovered in a mottled blue fabric. They didn't have a wing rocker, just this flat back one. I was asked to reproduce the rocker in the painting as best I could and this is the end result; the wings are fashioned of some cardboard and duct tape. What a fun project this is. I'll be helping with the re-creation of window coverings in the main house as well.

Spring has sprung

The plaid is beautiful but the client wanted a bit of an update. The Raymond Waites floral fabric (Fabricland) was the starting point. A cover for the pouf, red and yellow gingham is next.

With the area rug removed for the summer and that fantastic lamp taking center stage, this is a new, cheery, really happy space.

White is nice but the gold is better

There is nothing wrong with the chairs as they were ( white ) except they didn't work well with the wood and leather and very warm living room. The gals found the micro suede floral print at Arlenes in Vancouver, on sale half price... and the chairs belong in the room now.

I haven't seen such a sorry chair in a very long time. It used to have a slipcover of pretty pink damask. Now it's tired and old and faded and ripped.

The floral chair

It seems like so many of the chairs I slipcover were originally done in dusty pink or dusty blue velour.

This floral suits the chair and it provides that little bit of color and print so necessary in a well balanced room. Pillows were made from the floral for the gold sofa - also slipcovered. ( See the sofa on the articles archive, click on the link to the left). We did new sheer drapes for the room too, now the homeowner is focused on an aubausson area rug. What an update. Sofa, loveseat, wingback chair and new sheers for a 13 foot window. Total amount was less than a new, medium grade, sofa and the homeowner loves it all. She said: "I've got a new living room."

Kindergarden slipcover.

The church has a kindergarden in the basement. That' s why the walls look like that. That's why the before sofa looks like that too.When it was time to paint the walls and update the room, I got the opportunity to do the slipcover. It's washable.

The old cover was getting very warn thanks to the two little beauties in the foreground. The chennile we used, (cudos to Fabricland again), has a soft aqua background and a gorgeous bronze cut velvet design. Quite a change.

Cushions from leftovers

I was asked to make a cushion to match the headboard and bedskirt. ( The gray one). What was left over for the cushion presented quite a challenge because there were only 4 pieces, the largest being 16" x 18", the other 3 about 5" x 16" so I designed this cushion and added a tassle. It's pleated on the right edge but only about half way - that's all the fabric I had. The brown striped cushion follows the same design and with the pleats it isn't just a typical striped cushion. I like being able to use one good tassle. I sew a button on the inside of the bottom pleat to which I attach the tassle so it can be removed for cleaning.

Grommets - the new way

I love finding new ways of doing things. A new 'gizmo' available on the market has made it possible to have grommet topped drapes close with all the pleat fullness moving along the rod, like normal pleated drapes. Until now, when grommet panels are closed, each pleat must be moved across the rod individually. The upper left picture is the panels stacked, the upper right picture is the panel closed. The picture above is the drapes half drawn showing the pleats moving along quite nicely. No fiddling with each pleat. Cool.

Just a side note to these drapes. ( They are in my TV room). When I got my sofa two years ago I wanted to slipcover it in this fabric but at $58.00 per meter (from one of my Designer Fabric books) it was too expensive. I found the fabric at a local Fabricland a few weeks ago on sale for $11.00 a meter. Because it is upholstery fabric, although light weight, the pattern is railroaded so the drapes couldn't be long. But I love them anyway.

Swivel Rocker

This chair swivels and rocks. It was in perfect condition; we found it at a second hand store. The client wanted a swivel rocker for the corner window, right beside the book case. The perfect spot for reading to the Grandkids, Kaylin and Ashton when they come home to visit.

Once again Fabricland fabric, $8.00 per meter, used 9 meters.

Blue chair one more time

It is a really vibrant print, the lime green piping is perfect and the chair creates a really sunny spot. I think it is going to someones bedroom soon. I have used fabric from this textile designer before, in 5 bedrooms- 5 different colorways and each one is spectacular. All his prints are a jaquard cotton - there is a woven design on the fabric as well as the printed floral.If you get a chance, go see this chair. Fabric cost: 6.00 per meter, I used 10 meters

Remake the swag.

We started thinking about this one 4 years ago. The fabric is perfect for the room and the homeowner loves it, but the droopy swag had to go. We wanted something a bit formal, not too fluffy and something I could make from the fabric we had. This is an Empire style valance. The bay measures 80 inches on the sides and 33 in the center section. I have a new way of constructing these huge bay valances so that they are very transportable, no velcro and no corner braces. I'm still working out the kinks but I'll publish something about it soon.

Up from the basement

Relegated to the basement. Still comfortable, still good design but really outdated fabric - and they didn't work together anyway.The finished chairs and sofa have been moved up to the main living room. They co-ordinate now, I re-designed the chair cushions to match the sofa

Semi-attached cushion chairs slipcovers

Two of these chairs, in great condition - just a bit tired. They are in the same room as the floral sofa ( once beige sofa ) that I did and featured here called 'Another Great Transformation', posted on July 3. The homeowner loves them. The cover is actually a really rich raspberry with small orange ( yup orange) fleck. Terrific with the sofa.

A nice place to sit

This is in a corner of one of the most amazing gardens in town. It's close to the highway but there is no noise from the traffic and the homeowners have established a fantastic vegetable garden in conjunction with water features, superb stone work, a lilly pond, lots of seating areas in sun or shade and tons of flowers. It's an oasis.

The homeowner chose a bright, slightly retro purple and green print for the setee and chair cushion re-covers, matching stripe for the cushions, cut on the bias for the piping.

Wouldn't you want to sit here for awhile?

The guest bedroom at the Red and Yellow House

Here is what we did with a lot of the leftovers from the main rooms of the red and yellow house. I'm not a quilter - my friend Jocelyn Karran put all the pieces together for me, I made them into the duvet covers and shams. We used a beautiful cotton sheet for the reverse of the duvets and that was the only fabric expense for both beds as everything else was 'scrap'.The homeowner even found a red television for this room. White wins again

What a difference a slipcover can make. To the left is one of the chairs in the before blue velvet. Above is where the two chairs are now; below is the closeup. The white is tone on tone floral: Rococco ( yes.. Fabricland) and we used a tone on tone white stripe for the side insets, the outside backs and the front band. The piping is also the stripe, cut on the bias. And it's all washable.

The Patio of the Red and Yellow House

We used a red and yellow outdoor fabric from Fabricland, re-covered the fouton style cushions on the sofa in red with yellow piping, made zip-on covers for the decorator chairs and used the toss cushions in both red and yellow for accents. I spent a wonderful afternoon with these fabulous people - went out in the boat, got some sun and had a tour of the lake. I see a lot of homes in this area and without a doubt this is the most beautiful, comfortable and inviting home. It is the perfect reflection of the owners.

From early 90's Southwestern to up to the minute green and taupe chenille. The semi-attached cushions have been replaced with separate cushions. They feel a lot better now too.

Another Great Transformation

A very nice sofa, very beige, just not a lot of pizazz. The 'botanical' print and added skirt changed the look from quite modern to a more country, yet still modern, style of sofa. We're doing the two side chairs next. Maybe in a raspberry tweed..

Valance and Side Panels

The lace curtains are nice but they needed to be 'finished'. Valances and side panels were added in a two toned stripe the client found at Fabricland. The window in the dining room is a very large bay, we did the same treatment there and also in the master bedroom.

The center window of the dining room bay was 103 inches so it posed some interesting fabrication problems but it got done and looks great.

White Denim Slipcover

This chair was slipcoverd in white denim from the local fabric store. 60 inches wide, about $5.00 per meter. I prewashed the fabric so the slipcover can be machine washed whenever necessary.

This is the before, the old legs were ready to fall off so new legs were made by a neighbor.

The white chair is a great addition to the teenagers navy and white color schemed room.

Hide-a-bed Slipcover

Cute little hide-a-bed, only 50 inches wide. The fabric was a learning experience - a really discounted sticky backed fabric that I won't use again, but it turned out OK in the end. At least the plaid is gone.

Inside mount blackout blind.

This is the typical roll down blackout shade, inside mounted. It has at a 1/2" gap on one side and a 3/4" gap on the other. The bottom rail is fabricated in such a way that there is a 1/8" gap there as well. We put a valance with side panels, blackout lined. Next step is to attach some trim to the bottom rail of the blind to overcome the light leak there.

What dimout lining does

The before is the verticals. They had bleached out from green to plum. Who knows.. The drapes; again made from my current favorite, Rococco from Fabricland, has a dimout lining. You can really see the difference. It was sunny and hot this day and the temperature in the room changed dramatically as soon as the drapes were closed.

I estimate the r-value of the drapes to be about 4, this is a substantial increase in cost saving for heat loss in the winter as well. In the before picture, the sun shining on the new hardwood floors is quite noticeable, this is just damage waiting to happen.

Magnetic Roman Blind and Valance Headrail

Some new developments on the magnetic headrail front. I can now put a cord lock system on the headrail, no need for a cord cleat as on the blind pictured here. Today I installed a blind 25" wide and 84" long. Some

new components are coming my way and I hope to be able to put a continuous cord system on the

magnetic headrail soon.. Stay tuned!!

This is one of the first ones I completed: Muslin for the blind, a jacquard for the valance. They are both attached to the metal door via magnetic headrails. What makes this different is that there are no screws into the metal door. This blind functions like a normal Roman Blind and has a cord cleat to anchor the draw cords. From yucky tomato paste red to great.

I found this sofa, a Flextsteel, on sale. Regular price was $2899, on sale for $499.00. The color was just awful which is why, I'm sure, it was on sale. I slipcovered it in this lucious bronze tweedy fabric that was a bit pricey but was just exactly what I was looking for. I unstuffed the semi-attached back cushions, tacked the old cushion cover part down and made separate cushions instead. If it is ever decided to go back to the original cover the cushion part is there. I can't think why anyone would ever do that but it is also good for my clients to know that the sofa has not been damaged in any way with the slipcovering.

Great lines on this chair, just really icky fabric.

The beige slipcover has a nubbly all cotton bullion fringe on the bottom and on the lumbar cushion but it is still all washable.

The red is a gorgeous fabric with a shot taffeta used in the double pleats and as the main fabric for the lumbar cushion. The perfect little tassels are a great find at Fabricland for 3.98 each.

Valances now are more formal. No fluffy things, few ruffles. Good fabric, good design, attention to detail. My software program allows me to take a picture of a window, design a window treatment and apply the chosen fabric, allowing you to see what it will look like before you decide. There are several examples of the use of this software on the website, as well as the Brown and Yellow Bedroom shown here in the gallery ( scroll down a bit).

Brown and Yellow Bedroom Done

This is the finished bedroom. The client will be selling her home in the spring so has opted not to paint the walls. If we were going to paint, we would use a really soft mocha.

The little chair has several incarnations including the '60's Chair' on my website, Designsewlutions.ca and I also used this fabric to slipcover a wing backed chair - featured on the cover of my website.

All the fabric came from the local Fabricland. The florals are both by Raymond Waites. Total fabric cost was about $250.00 The sheer was a steal at $2.99/meter, the throw was a remnant;$10.00, the floral was $6.00/meter and the bedspread is Rococco, color Maize. The bedspread is actually a duvet cover with a 36" extension at the top that allows for the pillow foldback. Not shown is the bedskirt that is the same design as the valance, and the contrast pleated edging on the bedspread.

This is the design on a photograph rendering for the window treatment. We wanted a classic design, something without ruffles but one that suggested a country feel. The rendering uses the actual fabric we chose.

This is the before. The window is off-center on the wall by 2 feet, so the sheers - a really cool eye-lash fabric- have been offset so the window treatment is centered on the wall.
